Favorite Quote: WikiQuote: "Hell, I've always been old Ben. Ya' know what though, I don't mind. I mean if my muscles ache, it's because I've used 'em. It's hard for me to walk up them steps now, its 'cuz I walked up 'em every night to lay next to a man who loved me. I got a few wrinkles here and there, but I've layed under thousands of skies with sunny days. I look and feel this way, well cuz I drank and I smoked. I lived and I loved, danced, sang, sweat and screwed my way thorough a pretty damn good life if you ask me. Getting old ain't bad Ben. Getting old, that's earned( Maggie MgLone, The Guardian)." [1]

Wiki Assignment 4: Reading and commenting (20 Points)

Due: MWF class: 12/03, TT class: 12/04

Read and Comment on 5 articles on the wiki

Add links to your personal page in this section + add a comment / reflection on each page you have read (what surprised you? What did you learn?

  1. Does Fitness Matter For Children With Disabilities: I personally really liked this article because I have worked with children that have disabilities, and I have seen how critical it is for them to stay active.  Considering their physical state they are at disadvantage compared to you or I, and it is important for the public to understand that just because one is physically disabled they can still be physically active with a little help and knowledge.  Being on a swim team for so long as a teen I know how rewarding athletic accomplishments can be, thus I do think it should be made into a priority for those with disabilities to help find a sense inner self and independence.  I completely support all disability leagues to help further expand these opportunities.
  2. Exercise Guidelines for high school students: When your in high school it can be difficult to find the time to workout.  When I was in high school I found it difficult, especially as I got older and began to drive.  When you are in school for eight hours and the last thing you want to do when you get out of your last class is go to the gym.  It was also hard for me to find time to work out when I began to go to school and work part time, because I was working after school.  Time management seemed to be the way to workout, after school and when I was not working.  I think this article helps give tips to these problems.  To push yourself to want to be a more fit person, and making time to go to the gym or be involved in some physical activity.
  3. Benefits of Flexibility: I found this interesting because the most I really knew about stretching was that it keeps your muscle from getting tight, helps decrease lactic acid build up, and can reduce soreness in your muscles if they have been under a lot of stress.  This article gave a lot more examples and illustrations about how being more flexible and stretching can better your physical state.  Better posture and better range of motion were two things I was surprised that flexibility helped.  After skimming over this article I plan to do a more stretching considering I need better range of motion in my hips and knees, this article was actually beneficial.
  4. The importance of water: Being a student in the health profession I found this article very interesting.  People always say how much water you should consume, but is it accurate and is it a healthy amount?  A lot of people, especially girls, in college forget to drink the appropriate amount of water to be healthy.  I know being in school you become busy and forget, or some people trying to lose weight leave water out of their diet forgetting that it is very essential.  Also I think those who are not very educated about what their body needs don't know that when you workout a lot or drink to much alcohol your body becomes dehydrated and must be replentished.  This article is very educational because it illustrates how important water really is for the human body, and also gives tips to help maintain that.
  5. Vitamin supplements I know being in college I don't get the appropriate amount of vitamins needed.  I also know this is more than likely true for the other vast majority of college students.  This is mostly due to the lack of money, food, and time.  When I am older I know I will be able to find more of my needed vitamins in the foods I eat.  After looking over this article I realize I need to be more consistent when it comes to taking vitamins.  I like this article because it shows the importance of vitamin supplements.
