How To Keep The Weight OFF In College!

slide errorPlugin error: That plugin is not available.

Many college students come home from college with many life eperiences and a lot of knowledge; but they also come home having gained something else as well, a little extra weight. While most college students believe that the "freshman fifteen" is something that all college students go through, it is actually preventable.

     Alcohol

  • Alcohol has an abundunace of calories, with absolutely no nutritional value
  • These are called empty calories add they only add up to extra pounds
  • Drinks such as beer and alco-pops are very high in carbohydrates
  • If you want to be really healthy both physically and mentally you should avoid alcohol completely

     Sleep

  • To maintain a healthy weight, it is necessary to get a good amount of sleep every night
  • College students find themselves cramming for exams all night, while their minds and bodies pay the price for sleep deprivation.
  • In recent studies it has been found that women and men who get seven to eight hours of sleep at night were healthier and leaner than those who only got five or six hours.

     Food[1]

  • College dining halls are notorious for providing plenty of greasy, fatty, unhealthy options for meals.
  • For breakfast, choosing to eat oatmeal or cereal in the dorm is a good substitution to cafeteria food.
  • For lunch and dinner opt for grilled chicken, the salad bar and fresh vegetables.

     Exercise

  • Staying active is also a great stress reducer for bogged down college students.
  • There are easy ways to stay active even for the non-athletic students
    • Simply walking to class adds activity to the day.
    • Arranging group outings to places like bowling alleys, hikes, or any activity that gets people up and moving.
    • Even parties that involve dancing can be great exercise!

     Stress Reducers[2]

  • College students need to find things to do that reduce the every day stress they get in college.
  • Instead of over eating, students need to take a walk, read, take a nap, join a club.

What You Can Do To Keep the Freshman 15 Far Away[3]

  • Avoid eating while stressed, while studying or watching TV
  • Eat slowly
  • Eat at regular times, DO NOT skip meals
  • Pick lower fat options such as skim milk or low fat salad dressing
  • Choose nutritious foods
  • Watch the size of your portions
  • Steer clear of vending machines
  • Keep healthy snacks on hand like fruit or vegitables

With just a few simple modifications to the traditional college lifestyle, college students can easily avoid weight gain. Remember, it is much easier to keep weight off than to lose it.

Good job Pauline, I specially like your tips. Rather then saying what not to do, you provide some tips on what you can do. Great resource for college students!

I found this article helpful. I found surprising that eating in front of the TV makes people gain weight.

This was a very informative article. I like that you gave tips on what types of foods we should eat in the dining halls! The video wasn't informative, but it was interesting/fun to watch!
