Eat Smart When Dining Out

Making healthy choices when eating out is not always easy, but is very possible. All you need are a few tips to help you along they way and you are good to go!

You can always ask the restaurant if they will:[1]

  • Serve margarine rather than butter?
  • Serve fat free milk rather than whole milk?
  • Trim visible fat from poultry or meat?
  • Leave any sauces off of a dish?
  • Serve the salad dressing on the side?
  • Use less cooking oil when cooking?

You will want to select foods which are:

  • Steamed
  • Garden fresh
  • Broiled
  • Baked
  • Roasted Poached
  • Lightly sauteed or stir-fried

A few things to remember when eating out:[2]

  • Don't be afraid to special order.
  • Pay attention to portion size.
  • Watch your salt.
  • Try to avoid buffets.
  • Choose water over soda.

When eating in fast food restaurants you will want to:[3]

  • Order small single burgers without cheese rather than double burgers with many toppings.
  • Choose whole grain bread for burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches.
  • Choose chicken items made from chicken breast instead of processed chicken.
  • Order vegetable pizzas without extra cheese.

I really like this page! I didn't know that you could ask the restaurants to do all ths stuff. I know that I never check salt portions or anything like that so know I will know what to check for when I'm eating out!

There are lots of really great tips in this article. I will put to use the dressing on the side of salads and i never thought to ask to have them use less cooking oil.

This article was very helpful. I never would have thought to ask restaurants to do any of that.
